Hybrids are a step in the right direction. Now most of the big auto companies are working on plug-in hybrids, which are the last step before full electric vehicles. As a matter of fact, Honda recently said that they aren't going to work on developing plug-in hybrids, because they feel that if you can make a plug-in hybrid, you can make a fully electric vehicle.

Currently the battery technology isn't quite there for EVs, but it's close. In 2009 there are going to be several very good EVs introduced, and then we'll start to see more electric cars on the road.

there is nothing to stop a ev from running on hired batteries then all you need to do is call at a station and change batts like you do when you need petral you call at a garage you would just pay for the recharge same as they do with gas bottles

The whole idea is rather stupid as the electricity has to be made to charge an all electric car. Using the fuel as a primary power source is the most efficient way as only about 30% of the power used actually is delivered as electricity. So you want to be green use an petrol powered car.

Hybrid cars are a total rip-off, built to appease stupid government legislation and a few celeb tree-huggers. As you say, they still use petrol or Diesel, while lugging around an extra couple of hundred kilos of batteries and added electronic gubbins. For what? To travel a few miles at under 20mph when the normal motor kicks in. Apparantely the mining for the batteries is creating its own environmental issues too.
Unfortunately, pure electric cars are never going to happen on any useful scale either, partly due to the battery issue ( batteries are a really inefficient way to power a car ) but mainly because of this. Where do you think the electricity to recharge the batteries comes from? In the UK, like most of the world, it comes from coal-fired power stations, which are worse for the environment than modern cars are.
Hydrogen is the best suggestion for alternative fuels we have so far.

electric is only good for the shortest of inner city trips ..
90% of drivers expect there cars to go anywhere anytime..

do you know how long it takes to drive from southern california to the northern parts.?..about 14 hours at 70 mph..
in a electric car it would take a couple of days if you could find a place to set and let it recharge

Too expensive to make 100% electrical cars, some are available but too much $$ to justify. I am getting a Hybrid or Diesel next. US needs to raise tax on gas and create more tax break incentives for clean fuel transportation and conservation of resources.

actually they might be. there was a man that lived in columbus ohio in the 80s who had claimed to have came up with a hydro powered car. yes, a car that ran on water. he had many meetings with car companies and oil companies and was rumored to have been assassinated by one of those groups. he was never able to make it work while he lived. the idea was dropped after he mysteriously died. nobody has figured out how he died or how his idea worked. i wish i could remember the guys name. there was an article in the columbus dispatch about it maybe 3 months ago. google water car and maybe you'll get something.
