Does it make you a bad person if you prefer to buy from a breeder rather than getting a rescue dog?

Would you judge somebody just because they chose to buy their dog rather than rescue one?

No, not at all. If you want a dog, you might as well get one you are going to love not like. If that means going to the shelter, great. If that means going to a breeder, wonderful! The shelter is right for some people and not for others. Also shelter dogs sometime do not get along with small children which makes people prefer to buy and train their own pet! Hope this helps!

I wouldn't judge a person just because they buy from a breeder. I think it's a personal choice. Rescuing dogs are great, but not for everyone.

of course not, i paln on getting a dog in a few months, but i would like to get a rescue dog, mainly because of the initial cost, but if you can afford to get a purebred then go for it and good luck, if someone is judging you for that, then thats crazy

not at all. you know what you are getting from a breeder and have some sort of idea what characteristics the breed has. a lot of rescue dogs have emotional problems.

yes.... why buy one, when you can save the life of another... think about it, they're both dogs either if they're from a breeder or shelter. except one is going to be killed if its not adopted, and the other one will be alive and happy in someone elses home. so yes it does make you a bad person (in my point of view)

no,most of the time breeders sell better quality dogs and from rescue centers you don't get to know a lot about them and can't see their mom or dad.either way has benefits

Nope. It's OK to get a puppy from a reputable breeder... That way you encourage good breeders to keep producing good dogs.

Not all Rescue dogs are healthy and easy to care for. Some have special needs, and most folks don't want the uncertainty.

I always get mutts... not even purebred Rescues... but I have been very lucky that my mutts have been very healthy and robust, because I don't have the time for a special needs dog, either.

Not at all! Personally, I have a pure bred dog and I love her to death. It's not that I don't like "mutts" (I volunteer at a shelter) I just preferred a pure bred.

    No !!!

People will always judge you whatever you do so don't worry!!! If you are able to provide a loving home to any animal and are prepared for the vet bills etc then go for it. Do your research first.
    Happy times ahead, good luck!

P.S. wait for the negative comments cos they will come thick and fast!!!

It isn't wrong. Some people just prefer one or the other. I prefer shelter dogs just because it makes me feel good that I saved a dog's life instead of helping the pet population be overcrowded from backyard breeders and such.

No. When I get a dog, I am looking for something specific. A size, temperament, behavior, all predictable behaviors from a certain breed. The only way to get this level of predictability would be from a reputable breeder.

If I were just looking for any dog to be a playmate and companion, I would look in the pound. My parents and brother, all prefer "pound puppies". Every one that they have gotten have been wonderful!

It is all a matter of preference!

As long as it's a reputable breeder who has done the necessary testing, showing, etc, etc, etc ... to produce a quality litter of registered pups, then NO it doesn't make you a bad person.

If you buy from a "so-called" breeder (backyard breeder or puppymiller), you're just lining that individual's pockets and getting a poor-quality animal. You'd be further ahead to get a dog from purebred rescue.

If you get a dog from the pound, shelter, or breed-rescue, you save a life.

I bought one of my dogs from a good breeder and he was worth every penny that I paid for him. My other dog is a $20 mutt from the pound, and I love her just as much.

Definately not! I recently bought a puppy, Hercules, a Boston Terrier, from a breeder. We love him to death! We adopted an English Bulldog, Zeus, from a shelter (Zeus and Hercules!). His previous owners bought him for $1800 and then abused and abandoned him! :( He's about 6 years old and he's our baby! Both of our dogs are just so spoiled!!! It doesn't matter where you get a dog, as long as there is a connection between the two of you. I don't even care about the breed of the animal, as long as the whole family has that special bond with him or her. Good luck!

There's nothing wrong with wanting a well-bred, even temperament dog from a reputable and responsible breeder. It isn't ok to purchase a dog from an irresponsible backyard breeder, pet stores, or puppy mills when you could better use that money to save a life at shelters. It takes a lot of research to find a reputable breeder who really cares for their puppies and dogs and is putting forth a real effort to improve the breed.

If it does, then I'm very bad!! When I buy a dog, I know what I want in a breed as regards size, temperament etc. & I want a puppy I can train from being weeks old & I want to know that it came from a good breeder & healthy parents. Any problems we may have later on are then fully my fault!
Any dog I buy has to fit into our lifestyle & get on with my other dogs and I'm not prepared to risk taking on a dog who may have issues which only come to light months down the line- doesn't stop me admiring people who do take on dogs with huge problems though.
Any puppy is a potential rescue - a puppy which comes to me is here for life, so he's one less in the rescue kennels anyway!

No. We've bought pedigree dogs and rescued homeless dogs at different times... There's time to adopt rescue dogs and to have pedigrees. Even if you never adopt, it shouldn't be an issue. As long as you treat the dog you have well, give it love and affection, that's the main thing.

I don't judge someone because they want to get their Pure Breed dog from a Reputable breeder. They want to be sure they are getting what they want. A healthy puppy whose parents have been health and temperament tested. That doesn't bother me at all. What does bother me is when people don't even consider adoption, and they just open up the news paper and look for the cheapest puppy they can find. They end up buying a puppy from a backyard breeder. Or when they buy a mixed breed "designer dog" from a breeder, that really irritates me too. Why pay hundreds of dollars for a mixed breed dog when you can find the exact same mix in an animal shelter, and save a life?

No it doesn't make you a bad person. Some people will try to judge other people if they get a mixed Bred dog. That is even if they don't get the dog from a Backyard Breeder or a Puppy Mill. They even try to do that if people get a dog from the pound.

I've had my share of rescue and pure bred dogs, and on balance, I think choosing the personality and breed characteristics you want to live with for the next15-20 years makes a lot more sense to me.
I have had a few really wonderful rescue dogs, and a purebred rescue dog who was a real fruit cake with behavioural problems which were very difficult to live with caused by her time in the shelter and the life that led her there. After 8 years living with her, I have to say, I think with hindsight, it might have been kinder to put her to sleep.
I'm not saying rescue dogs are a bad idea, just that you should think hard about how much you plan to give to your dog, and what you expect in return. If the second list has more than one thing on it, go to a good breeder!

no, as long as they buy from a reputable breeder. i prefer to rescue because i know there are way too many strays and many are not wanted because of emotional problems they may have. however, i am used to helping dogs with problems because my grandma took in strays that needed a home before i was even born. however, breeders are better for someone who doesn't have a lot of time trying to break bad behaviors.

Not at all, you get to know the whole of the dogs history and can enjoy the puppyhood stage, you have a 'clean' slate rather than trying to work out the problems a rescue dog may have. I'd have loved to have known my present and previous dogs as pups and to have been part of their lives all the way through. Think carefully about the cost though, I was amazed that puppies can cost over £600, and then the owners find they can't look after them, so have to give them up. You can rescue a young, well bred dog for the cost of a donation! Mind you, good value for a lifetime of laughs and love.

No, it's a personal decision. It doesn't matter to me shelter dog or purebred. A dog is a dog & deserves a good loving home.

    No it definatly doesn't,
While theyre are thousands of dogs in rescue shelters needing a home, it doesnt mean that this will be the correct choice. I myself at the moment have a rescued dog and one from a breeder, its all about what is right for you, after all it is you who will be caring for the animal.
One person may find it hard not to take a rescued dog wheras the next person may find it impossible to have one, I do promote people taking on a rescue dog, but like I say it doesnt make you a bad person for buying from a breeder. What is important is that you and your new friend are happy and you make the best choice for you. x
