Getting around NYC is so easy...that you can pretty much stay at any hotel along 5th ave or a few blocks in.

57th and upward blocks (upper east side) ---have high fashion shops---gucci, prada, ralph lauren, etc...

45th is in the mid-town section....you will still find some high end shops around here....but common stores are more popular here...gap, express, j.crew, anthropologie

even further downtown....is the garment district and soho....soho has some wonderful trendy shops plus more common such as urban outfitters, gap.

So what i would do is get the better priced hotel...save money so you can use it for shopping....subways and taxis make it possible to go anywhere really quickly.

Even walking from 45th to 57th is not a big deal...when you are walking and shopping....you can walk 20 blocks easily without realizing how much you walked.

It depends on what you are shopping for. 57th is closer to the uptown shops & 45th is closer to Times Square & the Garment District.

Since you neglected to give us an address on 57th St I had to go to the Holiday Inn Express site and find it .The address is 440 W 57th St -Columbus Ave -
Something else I discovered is that HIE has a property on Lafayette St one block north of Canal St.
The Lafayette St property would be my first choice because it's smack right in the middle of Chinatown/Little Italy/ Soho .In addition to being surrounded by shopping of all varieties , after the sun goes down the area is alive with good restaurants and clubs and things to see and do . The other hotels that you suggested don't offer anything near that amount of possibilities .If you're going to be living in a place for 4 days pick a place that's easy to
live in . Also of importance is the fact that there's a subway stop -Bway & Canal - a block and a half a way that will easily allow you to get anywhere in Manhattan quickly.
    How would I rate them
    1) Lafayette St
    2)57th St
    3) 45th St.

It makes no real difference. There are many diferrent shopping areas in NYC -- 12 blocks is nothing ...as long as you are some where in that area you will be fine. Would would have to take the subway to some areas like SOHO or Chinatown anyway.

I agree with other posters. NYC is very large and there are different shopping districts everywhere....12 blocks isnt really going to make that much difference. Stay wherever is nicer on the wallet. Remember to spend 24 bucks or whatever it is now on a weekly unlimited metro card, you'd be surprised how fast 2 dollars adds up.
