Trip to Germany?

Question

My boyfriend and I are flying out to Hamburg on the 7th of September. We're going for the Police Concert on the 11th. I am looking for ideas of what to do. I heard that there isn't much to do in Hamburg, so I was thinking of taking a train to Berlin, or something like that. I know I can check online, but I am really looking for some personal insight about hotels, trains, sights etc in the two cities, or even other options. I don't have much money to spend on hotels...probably £50 a night.

Hamburg is a huge city with lots of things to do!
Hamburg boasts 31 theatres, six music halls, ten cabarets and 50 state and private museums. Of the 4,000 restaurants, 2,400 offer foreign cuisine.

The banks of the Elbe and the Alster rivers are ideal for a stroll. The port sight-seeing trips are impressive and they offer a special perspective on the panorama of Hamburg.

Right in the heart of the city, there is a large lake: the Alster. A boat tour on the Alster ends up in the city center, where you can go shopping or relax in a street café. And Hamburg's modern underground trains and buses will take you anywhere fast, for a small fare.

The area around Hamburg is especially delightful. The fruit-growing area of the "Altes Land" with its old farmhouses is especially suited for excursions by bus or on bicycle. The historic old towns of Stade and Luneburg can be reached in half an hour. And a trip to Lübeck or the beach on the Baltic Sea takes only one hour by car.

Stay in Hamburg...... I liked it better than Berlin anyway, you can find a lot of things to do online if you look hard enough. Have a nice time.

Don't know about Hamburg, but Berlin has enough to occupy you for a couple of days.
Cheap hotel for that purpose would be one of the Ibis hotels.These are clean and basic and well within your budget,(check the Accor Hotels web site for rates and availability). Get the train to the new Hauptbahnhof, and buy a 48 hour "Welcome Card" and a decent U/S Bahn map. The Welcome Card is a combined Travelcard ticket and book of discount vouchers for everything from massage to museums.

If you're feeling cultural then a morning spent on the Museum Island will feed your soul. The new centres at Potsdammer Platz will entertain you and provide a surfeit of shopping. For Caberet there is the Freidrichs Palast.

It depends on what you're looking for. It doesn't matter whether you want historic places, restaurants, museums, or night life. Hamburg has a great deal to offer. Determine what your interests are and look up Hamburg on the Internet. Personally, I think you could spend a week in Hamburg and still not experience everything it offers.

stop at a gast haus "guest house" overnight .they are like small restaurants come pub where locals go to natter round the stammtisch which is a large table.all very friendly ...you would not usually sit at this table unless invited ...they are cheaper than hotels by far....Hamburg is a massive old city with a huge port ........i have never been there though

Hamburg is the second larges city in Germany so you shouldnt have to go to Berlin.

My opinion: You can do and find pretty much anything in Hamburg. I would check Hamburg out if I were you. And you are not that far from the ocean either if you wanted to see that. Take the train to HUSUM. That is a small town by the see. It would take you around 2 hours to get there. I just love the old northern Germany buildings. http://www.tourismus-husum.de/

I'd stay in Hamburg, because there's loads to see. St. Pauli alone should be worth the trip *g*. Hamburg offers a wide variety of museums (e. g. Erotic Art Museum, Hamburg Dungeon, Art Gallery and Gallery of Contemporary Arts) and loads of pubs to go to or just enjoy the city, which is really worth seeing. I'm sure you'll have a nice time there and won't get bored.
