I am going to be Auckland, New zealand for 7 days in November. I have budget of around £250. What should I do?

I am going on a study cruise that calls into Auckland for 7 days. Im excited about going, but dont really know where to start exploring!

I have a budget of more or less £250 ($500US) for activities and trips (I don't need accomodation)

Im generally open to anything, but ideally would like to explore an island and see some of the Maori culture and heritage....

Any suggestions of what I can do and see? Thanks for your help!

Catch the ferry to Rangitoto and climb to the top or go to Waiheke and have a wine tasting at some of the vineyards. Go to the Auckland War Memorial Museum to see some of our native history and Maori art and cultural pieces. They also have daily displays of Maori dancing and the haka. I think it's $5 to get in. Get up really early in the weekends and go to the Avondale or Otara markets to experience the culture up close and hunt out some bargains and uniquely NZ products - coll t-shirts! You can email me if you want any advice on something you see on a website.

I would first start by getting out of Auckland. You don't want to spend your time there if you're in New Zealand. I would recommend going to Lake Taupo first since its closest to Auckland. You can also go to the far north end of the the North Island. There are lots of great beaches and island scenery. If you have the time and money, make it to the South Island. The Wine vinyards and the hiking is much better on the south island. Check out Queenstown and Christchurch.
Mainly just get out of Auckland and go anywhere else.

If you can, get yourself down to Kaikoura on the south island I absoloutely recommend the whale watching boat trips. You are near guaranteed to see Sperm whales. On my trip we also saw Dusky dolphins, seals, Orcas (killer whales)... and an albatros. Fantastic if you have an interest in wildlife.

Just seeing New Zealand is enough, it is an amazingly beautiful country and so sparsly populated. The south island is much better than the north from a sight seeing point of view.

There are so many things to see, I agree that you might find a £250 budget a little restrictive for seven days, even though NZ is not a particularly expensive country.

    haha I keep adding bits...

Jet boating is a New Zealand speciality and is both great fun and a good way to see some scenery. It can be done at several locations. This is the one I went on, again in the south.

You want to see Maori culture and heritage, then Aucklands the place. That is where they have Poremoremo Prison and there are lots of them banged up for years. Seven days isnt long, go north to Russell and Pahia, that is where the British first setup government there and where they master minded murdering the Maroi and stealing all their land.
