How do we remove creases fom a wedding dress?

Question

We ordered a wedding dress off ebay (excellent quality it was and fitted perfect!) but it was slightly creased when it arrived.

Is there a way to remove the creases without sending it to a dry cleaners or specialist wedding dress shop? Someone mentioned getting a steam iron and holding it about 6 inches from the dress and repeatedly pressing the steam shot button but we're a bit weary about doing that.

Any ideas folks?

Thanks for the ideas so far, but Ann....i said CREASES no grease....having said that, ill keep that in mind.

ooh, and for the record, the dress was brand new made to measure for my other half.

I work in a wedding dress shop and have seen some horrible things happen to dresses my proffesional opinion would be for you to take it to a dry cleaners. that way the owness is off you. if they **** it up.alternativeley i would reccomend Terrington and Burchett they will cost but its worth it

I think you could be right, however the hairdryer idea did work a little but not much. Thanks to you and everyone who took the time to answer.

Hang it on a hanger as high in the kitchen ceiling as you can. Fill the electric kettle and put it on the floor under the dress. Boil the kettle. Otherwise put a pan of water on the stove and boil it. Keep topping up the kettle/pan. OR borrow/hire a wallpaper steamer and use that to steam the creases out of the dress. Take the dress to a sauna and both of you have a treatment.

run a bath of hot water and hang the dress in the bathroom. the steam will de crease it. x

Yes steaming is the answer but if there are beads, glitter, cristals or similar I wouldn't risk doing it without independent advice. If it is plain then first try it with windows, doors closed in the bathroom as someone suggested with the shower turned to hot. Sometimes it takes doing it two or three times. Some Dry Cleaners will steam only if you ask them nicely and it shouldn't cost a lot. Alternatively, depending on the material it could be ironed. However, if you are not willing to do it yourself then even family members maybe afraid, knowing how much it means to you that they could have mishap with the iron. Best of luck.

Instead of using the steam iron and the heat that goes with it, use your bathroom shower! Turn on the hot water and hang your dress in the room, but not within close proximity to the water, you do not want it getting actually wet. The steam that the shower creates should be more than enough to hang out the creases. Do not let it stay in too long either because you don't want it to get 'droopy' Use the same method for your veil.

If the wedding isn't coming up too quickly, you may want to just wait a bit. I got a dress on eBay and it arrived creased, but I hung it up and in a couple of weeks they were gone.

If you don't have time (or you try it and it doesn't work), hanging it in the bathroom during a hot shower should do it.

i would suggest that you actually find an independant seamstress and takeit to them. they make charge you like $15 max to steam the dress. to buy a steamer would cost you more. but if u go to someone who works out of their home u will be good. seamstresses are always steaming clothes.

just use an ordinary household steam cleaner, most of them hace a special attatchments for curtains and such like which you put a little towelling bonnet on. just read the instructions and you cant go far wrong. good luck with the wedding

Put it in the airing cupboard or behind door when having a shower the steam will make creases fall out , or take it laundrette to have it steam cleaned.

If I were in your shoes, I'd take it to a cleaner...Partially to have the creases removed, but also partially to ensure that the previous owner's "dirt" was completely removed.

If you don't want to do this, you can do as other answerers have suggested, and hang it in the bathroom with the shower on, to steam it out. Martha Stewart also recommends using a clean, white towel to smooth it out as it steams.

Go on HSN.com or QVC.com. I saw a steamer there they were selling. This is the kind of steamer that stores use when they receive merchandise packed and it is totally wrinkled. This would be better than a regular iron. If you use this steamer, it will take out most of the creases. Also hang it in your bathroom (covered of course) and when you take a shower the steam will continue to remove the stubborn wrinkles.

steam it.....(do not steam iron it)....just steam it...you can buy proper clothes steamers from or any DIY shop...they are pretty cheap...steming will remove all creases....

use blotting paper, put blotting paper both sides of the dress were the grease is then put a tea cloth over the top and use a hot iron over that keep moving the iron, but remove the paper every so often and put a fresh peace there as the blotting paper soaks up the grease it will take a little time but it works well
