The beach resort of Sitges is very close by. Just a couple of stops on a train. Its very pretty there, windy streets lead down to the beach. Its a nice beach too.

A walk down the Las Ramblas is a must, and I think seeing Gaudis art work is too.
Get a guide book and plan now, then you are prepared.
Bon Voyage!

Gaudi's church is supposed to be the thing to do - I didn't like it but I prefer simplicity.
Watch you handbags, pockets, etc. Pickpockets are everywhere - they even managed to detach a camera from my belt.
There are some lovely praying Mantis up in the hills.
Good piccies to be taken overlooking the harbour (cruise ships, etc.)

    Goudis cathedral, weird but good.
Dunno bout the beach nearby, but Salou is only 11/2 hours by train.

there are beaches in barcelona down by the port olympique but they can get very busy.
just outside the city you have a number of beach areas costa del garraf, costa dairada, costa del marasme, costa brava further up the coast.
your in the gothic area so you will love la ramblas (the market is on a sunday), if you like to party dude it is a party town, things do not start even warming up till well after midnight.
things you must see, do not leave barcelona without going to PARK GUELL gaudis park and the SAGRADA FAMILIARE the unfinished cathederal.
be careful while walking around some parts of the gothic quarter ask at your hotel the places to stay away from.
