It is opiod analgesic, a prescription only drug. It is effective for the relief of mild to moderate pain. Also use for diarrhea and cough supression. Normal side effect include nausea n vomiting, constipation and drowsiness. Large dose can cause serious side effects : respiratory depression, hypotension & muscle rigidity. Max dose is 240mg/day oMust be avoided in acute respiratory depression and acute alcoholism.

It's a prescription only drug. It has an amazing side effect, it will stop you coughing immediately. I use it for that purpose.

In the United Kingdom, codeine is regulated by the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971; it is a Class B drug, except for concentrations of less than 12.8 mg when combined with paracetamol or ibuprofen, which are available in many over the counter preparations.

Do you mean legally? You are referring to the class of drug as if in the legal use of the word.

It is an opiate. A different chemical structure to heroine or opium but an opiate.

Codeine phosphate is a salt but is still classified as an opiate(pain reducer) . It has also been described as a narcotic analgesic (a pain reliever). When you purchase common OTC products like Tylenol with Codeine, the active ingredient is codeine phosphate.
