It will still be rainy season in Guatemala, but someone told me about a 'dry' period of time around the first week of August they are predicting... and that is when I am moving there! (Maybe we'll run into each other?) Pack light, but bring a good sweater or jacket for the cool night air. Enjoy the warm to hot daytime, but you won't see the extreme weather changes like you see here in Missouri! Take drinking water!(You'll just have to take my word for that one... and I recommend trusting me before you try to do it another way! Do you need details? LOL!) Sandals are good IF they have a back to them. Some mountains are hard to climb with your foot sliding out of your shoe especially because of rain. Barefoot is hard to do because of the rocks. And tennis shoes are good, but if they get gravel in them, it can be hard to get out if you're with a group that don't want to wait on you.
Take LOTS of mosquito protection and anti-itch cream (because the bug spray don't always work on them very vicious little moscas!) (And do check with airlines on the liquid/flammable restrictions.) If you get sunburned easily, you will worse in the mountains. Take a shady hat if you don't like sunblock, and keep skin covered for protection from bugs and sun.
It is a lot to read, but you should take the time to check out the American Embassy web site... there's tons of helpful information for travelers to Central America.
Have a super good time! If you're in the Aguacatan, Huehuetenango area, ask for the big, white, healthy American! LOL!!!

- Brilliant! Can't wait to go, hope you have an ace time too! :)
Also, one more thing:
With sandals, make sure they are also a good, sturdy kind. Leather or a material that won't rub blisters. If shoes are too flimsy, the rocks in the roads can make you twist your ankle and tear up your shoes...
