If you're going backpacking in Venezuela you must get the Venezuela edition of the lonely planet, they recommend hostels and hotels all over the country. available from all good bookshops.

In Caracas you can stay in cheap unsafe hotels or in good and safe not so cheap hotels. I recommend you stay at a good hotel because Caracas is not the safest place in the world right now. Here are some: the hotel Tamanaco in the Mercedes, the hotel radisson eurobuilding in Chuao, the Embasy Suites in Chacao, the Melía in el Recreo, and there's also the Hilton. And the four seasons in Altamira.

There are some cheaper hotels in the area of Sabana Grande and Chacaito like the hotel broadway and the hotel Cumberland. In Altamira there is the continental Altamira and the residencias Monserrat.
