Where to stay in the Austria Alps?

I'm driving from the Nurburgring in west Germany, just south of Bonn, to Milan over a couple of days. Was thinking of stopping off either in Munich or somewhere in the Austria Alps. I think I'd prefer the Alps option, any good cheap hotels or good hostels? Would be around the Innsbruck area I imagine...

Depending on your schedule I suggest to go for both:
1 day in Munich and some more time in the Austrian Alps.
For Munich I suggest to look for hotels in Feldkirchen, Dornach, or Riem. These are villages to the east of Munich inside the "Aeussere Ring" with easy public transport into Munich. Munich itself is always beautiful. You have many possibilities for sight seeing - the most famous the Rathaus at Marienplatz, Viktualienmarkt, Alter Peter and Liebfrauenkirche - all in easy walking distance. Additionally there are many great museums, like my favorite the Deutsche Museum (http://www.deutsches-museum.de/ ).

For accommodation in the Austrian Alps you already have the right ideas. I suggest to contact the tourist office in Innsbruck (http://www.innsbruck-tourism.at/ ). Depending on your finances I strongly suggest to consider camping as option besides hostels.

oh my gosh...you have to stay in a little village called wagrain..
the hotel is called berghoff and there is a website. it is way up on themountain top and no matter what room there is a great view. we stayed there on our way back from italy, and my husband and his family have stayed there since he was little. the price is great, huge rooms, still old style but kept very nice, huge restaurant and free breakfast and other wise great food, lifts down to the city, walking trails, and in the summer it is not too busy...we were there in july and only 3 other families were there. its more a ski resort so not so busy in the summer. youwill always want to go back there, it is beautiful. the other family there had been back 21 times.
    its very affordable.
