May is a good time to go as the tourist crush hasn't reached its peak yet. If you want a good meal at a place the locals go to, try a pub called "Kompressor." It's a pub that serves great pancakes with your choice of fillings. Go right before noon. Near the railroad station there's a Russian place whose decor is a throw back to the Communist Era. Also off the tourist trail is the old Orthodox church a block up from the gigantic store, Stockman's. Check out the tree right in front of it. Amazing!

Tallinn's Old Town is small and you can see a lot of the the city in a couple of days. There are a number of hostels near the centre as well as hotels that meet all budgets. Most clubs are looking to attract young people, and the music is a reflection of that scheme. There are a number of them in and around the centre.

There is a very good tourist information centre as well. Most young people in Estonia speak English and while they are shy at first, will always try to help visitors. Older folk tend to know Russian, but most won't speak it except as a last resort.

Crime is low there and you should be safe in most areas.

biggest photogallery of Tallinn you can find at http://www.oldtallinn.com/
where you can select best places to visit - just print photos and show any taxi driver in Tallinn :-)

taxi cost in Estonia is about $0.8 per km - i recommend you to use white taxi "Tulika Takso" (usually Opel) local number 1200 (check, payment by credit/debit cards - most trusted taxi company in tallinn)

    cheap hotels from $40
    http://www.dzingel.ee/en.html
and not cheap like radisson sas (amazon panoramic view on tallinn http://www.oldtallinn.com/panoramic/2006…
    http://www.tallinn.radissonsas.com/
    http://www.revalhotels.com/en/Hotels/Est…
    http://www.viru.ee/?lang=eng

dining - from $10 within 1 km from centre of city an starting from $50 on centre of tallinn,

buss tickets is one euro per hour so it is best if you buy a ticket for 10 days - it cost about 10 bucks for 10 days for adults and valid for buss, tramway and trolleybus (non express)

tallinn is beautiful and small, prices and services cheap, and i hope you will be happy by visiting this town!

There's a couple of places you might use to help your research:

The Official National Tourism website for Estonia :http://www.cheaperthanhotels.co.uk/Eston…

    Tallin Accomodation :http://www.cheaperthanhotels.co.uk/Eston…

This may help coupled with other's good inputs here.

If you are at all interested in history Tallinn old town is fascinating. It is the largest old town in northern Europe. You come up from the harbor, go besides Paks Margareta (Thick Margaret) the tower towards the harbor, and walk up towards the Town hall square along Pikk (=long), fascinating.
Go and have coffee in Maiasmokk (=Sweet tooth) upstairs -and have a dinner at Vanaemajuures (At the grandma's) or Hansa -which is medieval. Just enjoy walking along. Or climb to Neitsitorni (The Virgin tower) which hosts Tallinn city museums collections or climb up to Toompea. The Estonians are very internetized so you can find a lot on the web-in English. If you are interested of what life was like in rural Estonia, go to Rocca di Mare, their ethnic outdoor museum. The opera is very good -and then, there is a lovely small cafe on Vene (Boat street) on the east side of the old town -a few blocks from Paks Margaret -Vene is parallel to Pikk. It is called cholocaterie de Pierre and is Vene 6. If you go on http://www.tourism.tallinn.ee/eng you find this with maps and a lot more. If you like old music Hortus Musicus is Very good -if they have something on -but you will find that and a lot more on the net.
Head reisi -have a good trip! wishes mary a
