Staying in Mumbai for two nights in August?

I will need a hotel room in Mumbai for two people, for two nights in August. It will be our first time in India, although we have travelled before. We want somewhere relatively central, but quiet enough to relax after a long flight and get a good night's sleep. We also don't want to blow our budget by spending a huge amount. Does anyone have any recommendations. I've checked out the obvious places - Oberoi, President etc. but they're all a bit pricey.

Finally, would anyone recommend travelling on to Matheran from Mumbai? I know it's monsoon, but can the town still be appreciated at this time of year? I don't mind getting wet or muddy!
