An i drink alcohol whilst taking augmentin the anti biotic? it says nowhere in the instructions that i cant?

I'm a pharmacy technican and have just had a look through my british national formulary, a doctors and pharmacists guide to every medicine produced and how to use it etc, and it say as long as the alcohol is taken in moderation, then it should do you no harm, although it may slow down the effect of the tablet, possibly making it less effective.

It may be fine. However, you should call the pharmacist or your doctor and confirm.

With antibiotics, you're not likely to have a problem with the alcohol causing a multiplier or other similar dangerous effect. However, it could diminish the effectiveness of the drug.

In general, those on antibiotics should NOT drink.

I think if you drink on antibiotics they dont work as well as they would normally.

Because drinking is a very common activity, be assured that the package insert/pharmacist's write-up would warn you if you couldn't drink while taking something! Not all antibiotics are the same, in fact there are many types and they all work in completely different ways, so just because it's common for antibiotics to react badly with alcohol doesn't mean they all do.

There is no particular contraindication to moderate doses of alcohol, while on penicillin. There is no interaction, and the efficacy of the drug is unaffected.

One of the few reasons for not taking alcohol with anti-biotics is if you have a urinary infection, because the alcohol dehydrates you; and you should be drinking plenty of water.
