Why is this question being raised about Premiership referees. This goes further than the standard of refereeing in the premiership. Football does not start and end with the premiership only. Widen your search and ask the question 'why are all referees pathetic', then you might get realistic answers. I support a league 2 team and we have had some absolute nightmare refs down here, they make the premiership referees look like 'saints'. We don't get the chance to have replay after replay analysed by Sky and MoTD, and talk through the errors that are made at this level, we just have to moan to each other and get on with it whilst suffering the injustices. Unfortunately, I can't let the 'assistant referees' get away without a scathing either, but at lower league level the don't appear to have much say in the matter as the referees seem to have told them, just signal for offside and leave the rest to me !!

In summary, the premiership referees are the best of a bad bunch, but believe me, you have not seen BAD until you get down to the lower leagues!!

Asker's Comment:
I watch a lot of lower league stuff but I suppose as a neutral don't get too caught up with the officials. The excessive media coverage I think is making them out worse than what they actually are. Yes some can have a bad day at the office, but they are in a no win situation a majority of the time.

They have a terrible job because they can never win. - Even when they have a good game they're rarely praised. Any mistake is caught on camera and scrutinised and the backlash that they get from some players and fans is just ridiculous. Glad i'm not in that profession!!

No, sorry, I think they’re OK actually. What is bad is the state of footballers. They show no respect to the match officials. They bully and abuse them and are permanently trying to influence them. They also must think that the refs are idiots with some of the stuff they try to pull (in particularly the diving). They need to show respect or be punished, like they are in Rugby.

I think the refs have a very hard job and carry it out well. They make fewer mistakes than the players (whacking a penalty well over the bar – how can they have the cheek to miss the target when they are paid £50K per week to hit it!).

I am a fan of football, but do not support a team, I just enjoy watching good quality games, so I have an unbiased opinion.

Think of all the mistakes the players make - and they're paid a fortune. I do thin k some referees make a rod for their own back through their style and manner (Mr Poll) - but in the circumastances I think they do as well as can be expected. Football referees - bloody hell !

Most refs are pretty good, they try to do a good job under very trying conditions. And then there's Graham Poll; the sole reason ANYONE with an ambition to be a ref should euthanised - just in case they turn out like him.

Exactly how many times can a ref get away with a) awarding free kicks to the PERPETRATOR of a foul, b) awarding penalties when the incident in question was CLEARLY not a penalty and c) sending players off for an offence that didn't happen, before the FA decide enough is enough?

And yes, my team have suffered abominably at the whistle of Poll!

Referees are humans so they make mistakes. Why do EPL referees tend to make more?

Perhaps it is because of several reasons:

    1. More pressure from fans - the cries for penalty and all. and when the refs dont give a penalty rightly or not the fans just BOO them. It takes a lot of EQ to hold your ground. I have not mentioned the player pressure yet

    2. Linesman don't often help spot mistakes. Perhaps we should teach the linesman not to focus on the action , as in where the ball is(very very very hard), and the events away from the ball. Because refs definitely will focus on ball action. You do notice that off the ball actions are usually the ones which refs are innacurate in right?

    3. Player discipline. You also have to nip the problem in the bud. One has to concede that with players who dive - it is a bit difficult if you do not look carefully. partly because other players are shouting in their face and arguing about other things sometimes

    4. The EPL is a physical league. Refs are encouraged to let the game flow. Which is a good thing

    5. Just dumb odd luck?

Besides, in Britain, who wants to be a ref? Seriously.

Yes of course some of them are, That`s been proved time and time again. But then nobody is perfect anyone can make a mistake, but it takes a VERY big (or brave) person to admit it. And I am afraid those people are almost extinct.

we had a premiership ref when blackpol played norwich- with the hussle and buttle of th lower league i think he wondered what hit him. he was blowing the whistle all the time for fouls which are so common in our division. I think they have a hurrendous time.they are watched time and time again under the scrutiney of the camera-there is so much at stake with these top club the managers are on there backs all the time-would you be able to put up with it i wouldnt ,so when some call them cheats, need ther head examinig because who in there right mind would cheat on purpose when they are so closely watched.

Yes, - they ARE! Some of them, - I won't name ANY of them, here, though), are WORSE than USELESS, - and must be taught that TWO yellow cards, - NOT THREE, - mean a SENDING OFF! We, - in England, - need people of the CALIBRE, - and, absolute UNBIASED nature, of the legendary ITALIAN referee, PIERLUIGI COLLINA! Nobody EVER fooled HIM, with their antics, an petulant FOOT-STAMPING! One STARE, from that man, was enough, to put thr FEAR OF GOD, into the worst offenders!

Phew!,glad I'm not personally aquainted with Tammipup. I have it on good authority that people who correspond using words written in capital letters are best being kept clear of sharp objects, and should under no circumstances be left alone with children or small furry animals.
Also his state of mind if he'd used multiple exclamation marks doesn't bear thinking about. Perhaps his minders should consider buying him one of those nice white coats with very long arms that you wear back to front.

Yes they are, you only have to look at Alan Shearer's record in scoring dubious penalty's that he cheated to get!!
