My favorite island!
Two must see's:
Sam Lords Castle.....learn about the lazy pirate and how he got all his furnishings...lol. It also has the most beautiful beach in all the world, but you cant swim there often, the water is pretty rough on the east (atlantic) side of the island.

Take a taxi to the old fort at the top of the mountain (hill) in the center of the island. Hopefully you'll get a taxi driver who is a good tour guide. Make sure you ask to see the "women's tongue" trees up there....ask him how they got their name!

Otherwise, just enjoy the beautiful English flavour, and soak up the sand and sea on the west side of the island.

You always have to be careful. If you are going alone, hook up with other people to travel around the island. It is on the whole, a friendly place, but trust your instincts about people....if you feel uncomfortable about going somewhere alone, don't! Food is about the same price as elsewhere throughout the Caribbean.

I am not sure about the hotel or location you are staying at. To get the most information on that you should look at http://www.tripadvior.co.uk - excellent site, wouldn't book a holiday without looking on it.

The island is amazing. I stayed in St Lawrence Gap which is excellent for nightclub, bars, restaurants...

My hotel gave us a free return transport service to Bridgetown which has excellent designer shops where you can pick up all your cheap alcohol, Tiffany jewellery, Coach handbags... most of your money will be spent here!

My best trip was on my bday there, its called Habour Lights http://www.harbourlightsbarbados.com/ it is a lovely beach party in the evening, with all-inclusive cocktails, food is lovely, good shows, excellent for adults AND children...

They don't have dolphins but you can swim with turtles there, and the coral reefs are lovely.

On Fridays they have a local event called Oistins Fish Fry, were you can enough a local beer and some fried fish and local cuisines. http://www.barbados.org/oistins.htm Don't make the mistake we made of dressing up for this event, its very laid back and casual.

Other than that enough the beautiful beaches, all-inclusive food, and friendly locals.

Is there anything you should be careful about..? No I was 21, and went with my 15year old sister, most family thought my parents were crazy to let us go, but it was great, and we never felt threatened, scared, or anything! The people are so lovely, and ever so helpful.

The most negative feature (which goes for every Caribbean holiday Ive been on) - I hate when the locals try and sell you stuff when you just want to read a book on the beach!!! Its so annoying, and definately happened here all the time. Just politely say no thanks, and turn away from them - don't get into any conversation with them unless you want to buy something from them... I went with Virgin and they advised us to buy all the trips with them (more than likely slightly more expensive) but you was covered, and you can get into all sorts of problems going off on trips with a stranger in a foreign country!! Just keep your wits around you...!

Have a good holiday, I had an excellent time!

Food is pretty good, buy bottled water just in case. There's lots of wonderful fruit to try so spend time in the markets. You can also chew raw sugar cane from fields, it's great stuff.

You picked an excellent country to go vacation in -- I've been there 4 times, will be 5th next week. All you have to do is be careful from getting robbed. But I'm sure that applies everywhere. Never leave valuables on the beach, but if you're with a digital camera, make sure you have it and in a knapsack or some sort like that (hasn't happened to me, but it happened to my friend who lives there). The cost of living there is high, the food is expensive, too. If you're budgetting, I suggest you go to a supermarket to get what you want to eat, better than paying a lot of money on restaurant meal each time.. There's a supermarket called SuperCentre at Southern Plaza in Oistins, there's also stationaries, shoes, etc..

Me: I used to live in Kendal Hill with my 2 friends who currently live there with their parents, wonderful people. But I can tell you from experience.. For shopping, to save on duty taxes, bring a passport when you go into town (but be careful).. There's also Cave Shepherd (sp?) where you can buy stuff (also bring passport there)...

Do check Harbour Lights as the person said earlier if you're interested. There's Harrison Cove. There's a busy street called Swan in Bridgetown for shopping.

For route taxi vans, cost is 1.50 Barbadian as well as public transport buses. (for taxis, that's different, expensive).

You can check Bathesba (sp?), if you like mountain like scenerios, do go to east coast. In St. Philips, do check The Crane & Sam Lord Castle as the other person mentioned.

Believe me, there's so much to do in Barbados.. If you have any questions, feel free to contact me. :)

Beaches, may I suggest Accra, Rockley, Maxwell/Enterprise, Silver Sands, etc.. :)

Bajan in the house! Check me when you get here and I will be able to make a few recommedations; trineshabeckles@hotmail.com. Other than that, you can party, go to the beach, lime(which is our favourite pass time), which simply means; you sit around with a group of locals, listen to music, drink and talk a lot a ****, usually gets pretty funny. You can drive around and take in the beauty of the island, it really is a beautiful place. Or you can visit a few places of interest, the food is alright but I eat it everyday so I ain't too fussy about it now-a-days. If you were coming a little earlier you would be able to enjoy some of the Cricket World Cup being hosted here from March to May, I am sooooo excited about that, that's another thing, we love our Cricket here, so learn a thing or two and try to take in a match or two. If you can't understand the local dialect, which you probably won't be able to, just smile and keep moving if you feel uncomfortable or ask the person to speak more slowly. Just use a fair amount of caution when you go out at night because there are a few robberies now and again, nothing major, just keep your head on and you will be ok, or hook up with a few locals who are always willing to hang with the tourist and show them around and all will be well. Enjoy.

Ps. Email me and I will send you my telephone number in case you what to ask anything more.
