i think in the north you have more "hippie tourists", in the south its more quiet and upmarket, in palolem you have the backpackers.
I always stayed in benaulim, south goa, about 6 km from margao,
south of colva (more busy)
benaulim itself is a quiet place, not much nightlife, but you can easily rent a bike or taxi for sightseeing

- good indian food at reasonable prices
