New York in Jan?

I'm going to New York in Jan with my boyfriend, and just wondered what the must-sees are in the city? Where are the best places for shopping? Should we head out of Manhattan? :-) Also, has anyone stayed in the Washington Jefferson Hotel? Thanks

If you go to Maceys (sorry, WHEN you go) go to their visitor centre with your passport and ask for an 11% foreign visitor discount card. Not many people seem to be aware that this exists. The view from the top of the Rockefeller Centre is better than that on the Empire State. Go boating on the lake in Central Park unless it's too cold. Do not miss the $49 bus trips round NYC. The night bus is amazing and the uptown loop takes in Harlem. Staten Island ferry is FREE - go over to the Island and when you come out of the terminal, go up to the main road, turn right and walk 50 yards to the small cafe overlooking Manhattan on the skyline. Also, tke the PATH train (42nd St Station?) over to Hoboken in New Jersey at night. Walk along the walkway on the shore and see a fantastic view of New York lit up at night. Take your camera. Then have a meal or drink in one of the shoreside bistros. Go to Grand Central Station, go down to the Food Hall and visit Junior's Deli for a sandwich, cheesecake, coffee, etc. Wonderful. It's where the cops have their breakfast - says it all! Don't be afraid to take cabs - they are cheap. Take the subway - seems safe to me. $2 to travel anywhere. MOMA (Museum of Modern Art) is free on Fridays between 4pm and 8pm - save $20each. Live music late at night in good company at Smith's Bar - 8th Avenue and W45th Street. Carry plenty of $1 bills to give as tips - it is expected. Walk across the Brooklyn Bridge - visitors seldom do - make sure YOU do! It's amazing and gives you great photo opps. Have a great time - I did!

Hi, not really a tourist suggestion but something I thought was great on my last three trips was to get a $20 all week long subway ticket, this counts for the metro buses as well. You can get them at all the subway stations, if they're not in the automatic machines - ask the teller, these things are great!!!
