I am looking at saving electricity in my home & office is there anything I can attach to the mains to help?

I am looking to save electricity in my home & office. I hear there are devices that an electrician can attach to the incoming mains supply that cuts costs by as much as 20%. If you know of any product or have experience of such a product, can you let me know type of product and how much you are saving in coparrison to your bills

The best way to save electricity is by NOT attaching things to the power outlet.

Most things (except electric fires) are designed to run pretty efficently.

I don't think there are such gadgets for mains, but what are attached to mains are illegal alterations to the meters which does not save electricity but only reduces the bills.

Attaching to the main supply can not only possible cause trouble with your electric but will be illegal. Otherwise your Electric Co. would be offering it to you, at a price, of course!

Check that all of the appliances are operating correctly, un-plug anything that has a clock in it (microwave, etc.) when not in use, turn down the temp on everything (water heater, heat, etc.).

Old appliances use more power than new. Check the price of new compared to the electric used by the "old" appliance.

I know of NOTHING that can be attached to the Mains to assist with electricity usage. The best of choices is to take a look at you attic insulation for heating and cooling purposes (Winter & Summer savings). Next, take a look at the efficiency of your furnace/heating system. If it is NOT a high-efficiency system then it may be costing you a LOT of $$$. Other things that can be done are turning off lights and not using anything that has heat involved in it (high energy losses there). Make sure that your windows and doors do not have wind coming thru them (heat loss). This can be immediately taken care of at a local hardware store using plastic or storm windows and doors. I only know that there used to be a device for sale which you could use for your freezer to cut electricity consumption. Why don't you telephone your Electricity supplier for advice. They will have lots of printed information on how you can cut your costs.

just attach a solar panel on the outside of your property this will save you money.

There is a thing called the "Smart Plug" it controls the electricity that your fridge and freezer use to the minimum required to do the job without excess waste.
