What are parallel universes?

A parallel universe is one where everything is the same - we still live on earth, you and me exist and everything else and it is governed by the same laws of physics. The difference come in the path taken by your life basing on a particualr decision that you took.
For example - At somepoint in my life I had to make a choice e.g. either pursue engineering or business management. I chose engineering in this Universe and currently I am content with being a software engineer. I took one road of the fork and I am in this universe. In a parallel universe I took the BusinessManagement road of the fork and probably I own a big business in a parallel universe.
My assumption is every time you have to make a choice and you choose one in this universe there will always be a story of you running in parallel in the other universes (The number of universes will be equal to the number of choices you have in hand)

A parallel universe is a universe that is the same as our own, where there is a Milky Way and an Earth, and a You and Me. Its a copy of the universe we live in.

Alternate realities that reflect typically either varying outcomes of events or varying decisions made by the central figure (in this case you).

Theoretically there are an infinite number of parallel universes, many of which would probably closely resemble your current reality, because a lot of decisions we make in life are trivial in nature (ie: toast vs. cereal for breakfast).

So if you are a believer of parallel universes, and say you have a big regret in life. In some parallel universe you made the other choice and don't have that regret. Of course, your "alternate self" might have a completely different and/or much bigger regret of their own.

It's a common theme/plot device for science fiction (particularly Star Trek TNG), and superhero comics.

A theory. I think, personally, that there are an infinite number of other universes, separated by absolutely mindbogglingly huge amounts of space, and that they intersect with each other at their outermost, most rarefied fringes, and that maybe, just maybe, there are shortcuts between the gaps, ie wormholes.

Although I dont believe in them. They are universes with clones of us that react in different ways and sometimes the physics are different. They are born at the same time but do different things. They often have the same friends as you though.

In general a parallel universe is a universe other than our own that exists concurrently with ours but we have no way of traveling between the two.

Whether or not these other universes actually exist is something science has not yet been able to answer.

These universes, if they do exist, could be vastly different from our own, with different physical laws, or could be similar, if not identical to our own in almost every way with exact copies, or near exact copies of you and I.

Some cosmologists (people who study the nature of the universe and time) have speculated that a universe may branch off into time lines with all possabilities.

For example say you are in the supermarket an can't decide whether or not you should buy non-fat milk or 2% milk and you eventually decide on the non-fat, well at that point perhaps the universe split and while you walk to the register with your non-fat milk, another you in the other universe branch that was just created chose the 2% milk, and from that one choice two new universes diverge.

This is similar to the movie "Sliding Doors" with Gweneth Paltrow.

Of course there is no way to prove any of this and it's just speculation on the part of cosmologists.
