Is is sacrilege to put a diesel engine in an Alfa Romeo ?

Question

The spirit of Alfa Romeo is one of beauty and sportiness - no place for diesel engines IMHO. I drive a petrol Spider and the best thing about it is the engine!

Additional Details

I have to say my Alfa is ultra reliable - always always starts whatever the weather! there is no rust and the ride is amazing- it a 1997 car by the way!

Diesel is the future, Alfa Romeo put diesel engines in their car, Audi won Le Mans this year with a diesel engined "car", the new common rail injection engines don't make that tractor sound anymore, they don't sound good but they don't sound like a bag of hammers either and can give you 50 mpg easy, most petrol engines struggle around 30 mpg, is it really worth the extra fuel just for a sweet exhaust note?
On a side note, for all the people knocking Alfa for rust, that may have been true in the '70's but in the 1980's they had Saab design their paint process and they are now better than average for rust protection 8¬P

Dude modern diesel engines rock. They no longer sound like tractors and many of them produce phenomenal power right through the rev band. I've recently driven two estate cars with more than 200 bhp which (no offence) could probably widdle all over yer Spider.
Get out and demo some new motors and be prepared to change your mind!

Yeah sacrillage, Diesel will barely run in in 10 years time yet the Alfa will have rusted away and be standing around in a scrap yard

People have been hung for thinking such foul thoughts!! Alfa Romeo's are for the driving purist only, any knocking old diesel belonging to some flatnose has no place even parked in the same street as an Alfa. And if yours is reliable as well thats a priceless car you have there!!

I nearly bought an Alfa once. You could put your fingers through the floor behind the passenger seat.....lucky escape.

Nice as a company car, liability as an owner.

It would be inpractical to put a diesel in an alfa. By the time the head heater turned off it would have rusted away.

If you had driven a 156 2.4JTD you would not be asking this question... This car makes the petrol versions feel VERY slow and boring.

i know what you mean i felt them same when jaguar introduced a diesel but the deisel s type can do the old curcuit at the nurbergring in under 10mins and thats a stock production model (top gear clarkeson couldnt do it so the girlie instructor showed him how) so its no slouch i just couldnt live with the engine sound so i'll stick with the petrol thanks

None of them are reliable anyway so I suppose it can't make it any worse.

To add some details, I work for a garage and we all hate Alfas because of the reliability problems. You must be lucky with yours!

Yes it would be sacrilege - the car would ruin the credability of diesels.

I had an old 1.5 cloverleaf and it was a great car, took me all over without a problem and was quite fast for a 1.5 and held the road well too !.
Although i did get a ride in a new diesel focus the other day and i was very surprised in the power and how quiet it was !.
Suppose id still go petrol though.
