I envy you! You've chosen a great spot!
Amsterdam is not the best place for common "site seeing", for that' more classic cities around Europe will do. As I get you, that's not what you're looking for (god bless...)
Suppose you got no more than a week, all you need is chill.
The city Center is small, and can be wondered around by foot easily, no need for car!
Everybody is kind and speaks great English. Enjoy the easy going spirit of this city, smoke a bit if you like that, try some nice restaurants, try some local food (not much to offer) like street wafers, herring.
A fresh copy of the local Time Out magazine will tell you all you need about the on going events, on all scenes.
If you feel like catching a train for a day trip, travel to Harlem city center or Modern Architecture Haag (Den Haag).
