What is there to do in Amsterdam!?

Question

My boyfriend and I have just booked to go to Amsterdam for our 7year anniversary in January! We are staying in the American Amsterdam hotel. We have never been before so if anyone has any good recomendations for things to do/clubs/live music/restaurants please let us know!

I envy you! You've chosen a great spot!
Amsterdam is not the best place for common "site seeing", for that' more classic cities around Europe will do. As I get you, that's not what you're looking for (god bless...)
Suppose you got no more than a week, all you need is chill.
The city Center is small, and can be wondered around by foot easily, no need for car!
Everybody is kind and speaks great English. Enjoy the easy going spirit of this city, smoke a bit if you like that, try some nice restaurants, try some local food (not much to offer) like street wafers, herring.
A fresh copy of the local Time Out magazine will tell you all you need about the on going events, on all scenes.
If you feel like catching a train for a day trip, travel to Harlem city center or Modern Architecture Haag (Den Haag).

Been there 5 times, got some friends there, so I'm on the "free accomodation tour" section, and "join the locals" club...

You'll have to take a boat ride of the canals...bring your camera, theres lots to see.

Take the tourists gratuitous tour of the red light district - its just an experience everyone seems to ask about.

Amsterdam nightlife is fun...enjoy your trip.

there is a heineken beer factory you can go to and have a look round.erm... obviously the coffee shops,there a really nice one in leidsplein called 'the noon'.There the sex museum but thats nothing special.You can go on a river boat tour,that kills a bit of time.The shops are ok depending on what clothes you like,there are a lot of nice markets there too.Enjoy you holiday x

Amsterdam is a place i went to once before with an ex boyfriend. I though we were going on a nice holiday and girl was i sorry. Now don't get me wrong i am sure there are nice place there, but my ex brought me to the red light district. There are girls in there windows posing and i think you know what i mean. Also the cigarette machines had hash in them to smoke. So now you know why he is my EX BOYFRIEND. That may not be were your hubby is take you to. Hope not

I went 3 weeks ago. Be careful of the cycle paths, the roads are no problem but there's bikes everywhere.

We got offered drugs every night, people would bump into your shoulder and say "charlie, coke, drugs". They would then drift behind you for a second to see if you would want them.

It's a nice place to see and we walked miles so I would advise proper trainers etc for all the walking you'll be doing.

Things I did:

Canal Tour
Anne Frank's House
Red Light Area (walked around didn't use)
Eat and drank loads
The Sunday morning tour
The market (is quite good)
The sex museum (not that good really but ok if you've a spare 30mins with nothing to do)

Clothes shopping is ok but I found a lot of the clothes were the same as home or just the same in all the shops. Dam Square is a nice area to visit but be warned we found it very expensive for a beer or anything in the cafe's etc surrounding the square. You're better off eating/drinking away from the square.

If you're into drugs then try the coffee shops. It's not really my thing so I didn't visit any but you can smell the stuff just walking past them.

I went for 4 days and by the 4th I was ready to come home.

Spent 14 days there. Had a GREAT time. Transportation was cheap and easy to get around. Plenty of coffeehouses to visit, museums, Anne Franks house. Watch out for the bike paths, they'll run you over...lol. If you're walking and you hear bells, you're probably walking where you shouldn't be, look around.

you have to visit the heinekin factory. It's well worth the money and it's fun and interesting. Won't spoil it for you cos you have to see it.

You don't have to do any drugs when you go to Amsterdam! My husband and I went earlier this year and had a great drug -free time.

There's a bunch of different canal boat cruises you can book. We went on one that also served wine and cheese, but they also have dinner cruises which I hear are quite nice.

There is the Anne Frank house which is a fantastic thing to visit. You may have to wait in a queue but it's well worth the wait.

Renaissance square has a lot of restaurants to choose from, we went to an Argentinian Steak house which was quite good and on the casual side.

And yes there's the red light district that almost everyone walks through once, just to check it out.

Here's a tip,, in Amsterdam the coffee shops serve cannabis. So if you just want coffee then you should go to a cafe!!

look on amsterdam info website itl give you a good idea of the museums etc. buy a guide book because you will need a decent map as the streets can be quite confussing. trips to ie volendam belgium etc can usually be booked at the hotel. its a fantastic interesting very relaxed place and im sure youll really enjoy it hope this helps

Ah, lucky you. Amsterdam is lovely.
There is Anne Franks house to see, quite sad but good.
There is Van goghs museuam as well as Rembrants.
Take a canal trip round the harbour.
Visit the red light district, just not after 12 or so.
And the coffee shops are great, quite a liberal experience, hope you enjoy.

I loved the Heineken Brewery tour. The Rijks museum is very nice, if you're into art. Take a day tour out of the city and visit some of the windmills on the countryside. Anne Frank's house is sobering, but worth a visit, too.

It'll be really cold in January, but Amsterdam is a gorgeous city that is just wonderful to walk around in.

Amsterdam is a fab place to go, from a personal experience I would give the Heinekin factory a wide birth rather dull and touristy compared to a decent real ale place in Britain. Lots of siteseeing to do, if the weather is good, a day in the vondel park is a joy they have an outdoor icerink down there, if you can be bothered with the q's there is the Van Goth museum, we couldn't and went to the Reich museum (prob wrong spellin sorry) which was great if you like your art and history. You can never get bored of seeing some of the canal bridges and the market is really colourful and vibrant not in the same irk as Barcelona but still pretty hot. Food wise lots of Argentinian steak houses but if you like your cuisine try an Indonesian rice table, first time we were there we hit one just of the Liedersplein (sorry prob bad spelling again!) which is one of the big squares surrounded by al fresco bars etc. I've been down the red light just to see what is like and I'd say give it a viewing as it certainly is an eye opener no need to spend hours there though! one street is pretty much the same as the next. There is a comedy club down by the museums that is supposed to be very good but I've not had the chance to visit it myself. There are also quite a few good clubs that I've frequented but I must confess that I can't remember any names (or even where they were!!!). Amsterdam is tops, I've now been three times within the last 5 years, twice on a stag do, once as a friends birthday trip where my then girlfriend (now wife) was there also, jsut to show it is not just a lads place she went there on her hen do too! I'm sure you'll have a ball.
