I hate it when people say we raise dogs for us to have something to eat. No way! Like other people from other countries, we take care of dogs and other animals because we believe that we human beings are not the only creatures on earth.

Anyway, there are some in the Philippines who eat dog meat but not all Filipinos eat that. Less than one percent of the population eat dog meat and many of them can be found at the Northern part of the Philippines.

I am from Baguio, Philipines and somewhere here, there is a place where people eat dog meat dishes. It is not actually a restaurant but it's just a small ordinary place where people come to eat the said kind of food. In the Philippines, dog slaughter is actually illegal that's why places like the one mentioned is condemned and kept hiddden.

Anyway, eating dog meat in the Philippines happens but it isn't rampant and one more thing is that, people here are not crazy about dog meat as many would prefer chicken and other kinds of meat.

Just like in other countries maybe. No matter how the people may say they don't eat dog meat, eating such could be possible.

I've been twice too - 2 weeks in 1993 and over 2 months in 1994 and I've never seen it either - baluk (chicks in eggs) yes and seen some strange stuff being eaten in Thailand a few times but no, never seen people eating dogs, although I've heard it goes on.

Yes, they eat dogs and raise dogs for the purpose of eating them.

Dog meat is expensive in the Philippians and most can't afford it.

Shops and restaurants that serve dog are kept on the side-streets of their larger towns so as to avoid offending tourists and westerners.

They believe eating the meat can keep them warm in cold weather.

Not only the Filipinos eat dog, most Africans do too, including other "bush meat" like snakes, snails, tortoises, and compared to a monkey or cat meat in my critical view, dog meat is yummy.

very few can eat dogs in the philippines and that happens so rarely. say one in a million. so thinking that filipinos eat dogs is just plain insulting. the majority do not eat dogs and its not even a filipino dish or delicacy.

Yes, it's true that there are Filipinos who eat dog meat but that does not make it a dog-eating nation. There are very few that do this which is why most visitors will not see it. It is not served in regular restaurants in the cities. You might find it in some small remote town.
Most of the people do have dogs for pets and would never eat dog meat.
But the rest of the country and it's people should not be condemned or criticized for what a few are doing.

In Baguio city, they sell dog meat in the butcher shop. I think
its only popular in certain areas. Like eating horse meat in
France and Morroco. I never saw it on a menu, but they have
it in butcher shops. Ditto with Camel meat in Saudi Arabia.

kinda funny, but there are places (in the northern part) in the philippines where dogs are a delicacy. thing is, it's awesome. i, for one, do eat dogs too (sorry for those who would feel offended by my admittance). see, it's really tasty if cook well. you can't even say it's beef meat or pork meat.. especially serve in a beer gathering of sorts - what we call "inuman". however, it's been criticize not only by foreigners but by locale media too. a bit inhumane act. so, i'm not surprise you won't even find anyone admitting they're serving dog meat. for sure, they'd be fined for that matter. there's a move for banning it here. but it doesn't mean it doesn't exist. they still do serve dog meat... be careful what you wish for... who knows, given the chance and someone hear you say it in public, a friend of yours here (a relative, maybe), may treat you to one...

my advice, it can be considered exotic food... depending on how it's cook.

it is because they butcher the dog where people cannot see them only the people who will eat it. when it is cooked you will not distinguished the meat from any other meat unless you ate it specially if it is cooked very well like mostly they soaked the meat in coke or sprite before cooking. But mostly people can distinguish a dog meat they said it has a certain smell and taste.

I am a Filipino and have been residing in the PHilippines for 25 years now. Since birth I haven't seen Filipinos eating dogs. I've heared a few but never gotten into meeting someone who eats dogs. Dogs are pets. I think that humor has to stop. It's not only Filipinos that have been rumored toe at dogs but as well as malaysians, chinese, koreans and indonesians. If there are really people eating dogs they are the barbaric ones. And with the coming of the new age I guess no one eats dogs now.

Yes, people do eat dogs here. Our neighbor sells them sometimes for P100 which is a bargain when you figure the cost of chicken is P100+ per kilo and a 10 kilo dog sells for P100... No, I haven't tried it but it has been offered to me on many occasions. As far as I'm concerned, meat is meat, depends on how it's cooked whether or not it's any good. Now balut? No thanks.

It's now illegal to eat dog but there are a few places that will still serve it. Probably not some place a traveler would be willing to visit but they're there. Also, you're not going to read "dog" on the menu...typically, it's called either "asosena" or "k9"....

It's real. I've tried asosena a couple of times.
It's not common and generally not something most Filipinos choose to eat.

And Trojan: Don't be a dumbass. Denying it exists then calling those who do it "barbaric" shows a poor understanding of your country's culture. Btw, WTF is this "new age" you mention?...hahaha

Not all Filipinos eat dogs and they don't raise them for the purpose of eating them. We have dogs and we haven't slaughtered any, or raised any for that purpose.

However, a lot of Filipino eat dogs, not for the purpose of keeping warm but it is something they eat during drinking session. It won't be normally served in the dining table because a lot of people won't partake in it.

It's not because Filipinos don't like foreigners to criticise them, it's just that dog-eating is a norm especially for drinkers. They won't eat it everyday but they do enjoy it during their drinking sessions. And if you want to see them eat dog, go where there's a lot of drunkards.

Sorry, I do not like people eating pets and I try not to go where I know the dogs are being eaten.

Killing dogs in the philippines is illegal you know so it can't be pervasive at all. There are only some people who eat it.

it was a famous delicacy azucena, dog's meat with thick tomato sauce and some potatoes and bell pepper, before it was banned by some environmentalist and animal protector group(thanks god!)though its still common in baguio city, its not being cook to serve to the public anymore.just for "pulutan" finger foods among local old guys drinking.my brother use to slaughter dog for his work,as a cook at an exotic resto before until it was banned.ive eaten some of it before not knowing it was dog's meat.

I am a Filipino, I also happen to eat dog meat. The reason that you could no longer see or hear of anyone preparing for dog meat is because it is not advised to and some health issues. If you will just critisize those that eat dog meat why not think of this. Kangaroo meat, camel meat. rabbit meat, lamb meat, goat meat. If there will also be a LAW that will not allow you to eat these meat. Do you think someone would still prepare it?

You cannot see them eating the dog as they will be in form of meat as beef or sheep. Dog meat is very dark as they do not drain the blood before cooking, I have been in a party which I know there were dog meat were served, I have to stick with veg at that party. I also have been told in Vietnam, Cat is often being eaten as well.

No it's true, about 10 years ago, I witnessed a dog being beaten alive to death whilst in a sack. It was then eaten. :-(

Dog meat is banned now though, so it isn't as prevalent as it used to be.
