Why does American chocolate taste like dog treat chocolate?

Whenever I've been to the USA Iv'e tried many varieties and it tastes like the stuff i give my dog in the UK. Yes Iv'e tried real dog food chocolate.

Hi, Glyn,

I'm American, but I have to agree with you.

I think it all goes back to the Hershey Company, which struggled at its inception to figure out how to make chocolate bars stay solid at room temperature without the benefit of a European chocolatier.

The weird recipe they eventually came up with gives the chocolate that distinctive tart-yet-scorched flavor.

Because most Americans don't acknowledge that you really DO get what you pay for, we have been throwing this stuff down the hatch for decades, never realizing that there is a Higher Quality Product.

(But, not me, Bub. I shell out for the Good Stuff)

Most chocolate sold in the USA is milk chocolate, which is okay if you've never tasted Belgian chocolate. And of course, you have!
The US product, aside from being full of milk, is sweeter. The Belgian (or almost any European chocolate, for that matter) has character, and I much prefer it.

Have you ever tried See's chocolate from CA? You can get chocolate shipped from there. It is fantastic, and in my opinion is the best the USA has to offer you. Their specialties include soft centered chocolates (like truffles) and things like peanut brittle!

I think I also know what you mean about dog treat chocolate...waxy and bland. try these See's candies!!

No idea if it is comparable with dog treats - but in my opinion American "chocolate" is not fit for consumption - whereas I presume dog chocs are...

I once took a bite of a Hershey bar and I nearly vomited. I am a bit of a stickler for manners but I had to spit it out. The memory still lives on. It's like liquid plastic that has been remoulded into bars.

If you are going to eat chocolate stick with Swiss or Belgian (then Cadburys when the other two not available).

Why are all the dear Americans offended?? A nation brought up on junk food has no taste buds. Europe is the home of haute cuisine.....it's a fact....like the US is the home of McDonalds....and another thing if this is the UK and Ireland questions why are so many of our friends from over the pond on here??

Wow, I'm really surprised they make chocolate for dogs! Leave it to the wizards across the pond for that miracle!

Chocolate tastes worse here in the US because it has lots of wax and other additives to keep it solid on the shelves. The first time I ever had a Lindor bar that actually came from Switzerland I almost cried. There is no comparison.

You will also find that dark chocolates are less likely to taste yukky than milk chocolates.

I don't know if you've tried some of the chocolate bars at Whole Foods Market, but they have some that have fewer additives. I particularly like one by a brand that is called Rapunzel. It never hurts to try more chocolate!

I fully understand you. But some places of Europe start to produce a crap too and monopolize local market, unfortunatelly. It is problem to buy normal chocolate without hydrigenated fat then. Very terrible. Many people would pay twice to have such quality chocolate they tried a decade ago, from Germany, France, Switzerland... Even imported things from the countries I mentioned seem to be coordinated with monopolists now...

I've had Hershey's before, that tastes like the Scotbloc cake topping. Americans don't seem to know what chocolate should taste like. They're suprised by Galaxy etc.
They probably use cheaper ingredients.

I've become a real chocolate snob since I joined the Chocolate tasting club. It's fabulous! You get sent a box every month, or every quarter of handmade chocolates by some of the finest chocolatiers in the world. Most shop bought chocolate even our superior British stuff isn't the same (especially when you look at all the extra ingredients that you don't really need in chocolate like hydrogenated oil).

I love Chocolate, commercial brands here are quite bad but there are some very good small candy companies that make some divine stuff. It is not worth the trip over here for chocolate!
