Why does American chocolate taste like dog treat chocolate?

Whenever I've been to the USA Iv'e tried many varieties and it tastes like the stuff i give my dog in the UK. Yes Iv'e tried real dog food chocolate.

Hi, Glyn,

I'm American, but I have to agree with you.

I think it all goes back to the Hershey Company, which struggled at its inception to figure out how to make chocolate bars stay solid at room temperature without the benefit of a European chocolatier.

The weird recipe they eventually came up with gives the chocolate that distinctive tart-yet-scorched flavor.

Because most Americans don't acknowledge that you really DO get what you pay for, we have been throwing this stuff down the hatch for decades, never realizing that there is a Higher Quality Product.

(But, not me, Bub. I shell out for the Good Stuff)
