Yes he did become Muslim, alhamdoulilah! (praise be to God).
Why is everyone assuming that he's guilty to begin with? Why judge people like that? In America, aren't we supposed to believe in being innocent until proven guilty? In Islam, if you talk bad about someone or spread falsehood about them, all of their sins are passed on to you. I actually think Michael is innocent. But if he were guilty, in the eyes of God, it doesn't matter anymore (so long as he is sincere in his conviction). All of his sins are wiped away. Also, when you become Muslim, all of your bad deeds from before are counted as good deeds (and all the good deeds are kept and multiplied).
Lots of people say that his conversion only makes our faith look worse than it already does. But I for one don't care (we've already endured other types lies about us, just look at the media). He has found the Truth, so good for him. I think he needed some peace in his life, what with people always criticizing and insulting him. He will be changing a lot of his ways for the better, and for sure he won't be molesting any children (if ever he did to begin with).
Islam has a long history of earning favor amongst unpopular crowds, and people on the outskirts of respectable society. Slaves and women were some of the first converts, as well as the poor, because it guaranteed them freedom and equality regardless of race, color, gender, etc. This did not make a good first impression in the materialistic and superficial society of Mecca, because for the Arabs at the time, such equality for African slaves, women, and others was completely unheard of. In India, a great number of the people who were deemed as "untouchables" by the rigid caste system were the ones who embraced Islam. I'm sure that at the time, Hindus felt that it made Islam look bad, being made up of these people whom they felt were hardly worthy to live. But in reality it served as a refuge of mercy for so many people! For this reason I really don't care if Michael Jackson might ruin our reputation as Muslims. Islam accepts any and all types of people- it's not about building an image that will look glamourous to everyone else. He is now my brother in Islam and I am so happy for him. :)
