click on the little british flag at the upper left hand corner to get the page in english.
they will give you the best routes, including gas prices and "speed trap" radar points, shortest itinerary, etc.
and at the right hand side you've a place to check for the hotels along the way.
FORMULE1 and IBIS are the least expensive of european hotels
You can go either down the Atlantic coast via Bordeaux and across from the coast to Perpignan via Toulouse, or the other way you say is via Lyon - Avignon - Montpelier.
Avoid the Peripherique (Paris ring road) if you can...The traffic there is murder most of the time. If you can avoid Paris altogether, even better...Its traffic is one of the most exasperating in the world.
Check out via the new Millau bridge (I don't know the route for sure, but it might cut across and save you driving time).

personal experience my daughter lives near Chartres, and my son in Grenoble...and we drive up from southern Spain to visit them.
