My girlfriends and I were just having this discussion. When we were little, we aspired to be doctors, astronauts, lawyers, engineers and this like. Children today (especially little girls) aspire to be singers, actors or sports stars. These careers are ones in which only a small percentage of those who attempt it actually succeed and gain fame. It is unrealistic for children to focus on such careers. It is our obligation as adults to encourage children toward interests, hobbies and possible career choices that don't focus on entertainment or sports. I'm not saying that those aren't valid and worthy interests, but again, that they are unrealistic career aspirations. Oprah did a great segment on this topic with Pink recently.
