The Burj shares facilities with the Madinat Jumiera (two hotels, a mall, pools, a canal network, villas for rent and a very good theater). Stop over there for a fun and easy day.
I stayed at Al Qasr, part of the madinat complex and liked it a lot. I think it is better than the Burj, not because the Burj is less luxurious (because it isn't the Burj is so top it is over the top, but because there isn’t much to do at the Burj other than a small pool and a tennis court. You have to take a buggie (i.e. golf cart) over to the Madinat complex, which is a really great place to stay. Al Qasr also is a very luxurious hotel, but is more top than over the top. A key to any three of the Madinat hotels gains entrance to any of the others.
Talk to your concierge and see if you can take a day trip to Oman (mandanam) for snorkeling and scuba diving. They arranged one for me and it was fabulous! I dind’t want to spend a day getting certified, so I just went snorkeling, but I still csa w amazing tropical fish, glorious nature with giant cliffs and ricky islands jutting out of the gulf anda bit of Oman.
In the city I usually stay at the Grand Hyatt just because Jumiera is a bit far to get downtown for business, even though it is defiantly nicer. There is a museum fort in an old souk area and another museum with an old Maktoum house and a few houses and a mosque built in the old style. Other than that (and taking an abras boat across the creek), there is nothing specifically “touristy” to visit. You can take an excision in the sunset, ski in the indoor skiing ramp, shop, shop, shop in modern stores and old-style souks and generally have a great time. Enjoy!
