Fill a large pail of water (2-3 gallons), and pour the water into the toilet. The gravity of this should remove a decent sized clog.

You buy a plunger, or use a toilet snake

Use a three liter bottle. Put it into the hole and squeeze. The air pressure will release a small clog.

Use a snake, but use some type of sheap tubing around the snake where it bends against the "first" porcelain turn (bend), otherwise the snake will scrath the toilet where people can see, and it'll look like hell forever.

Keep pouring in hot water (careful not to overflow :)
this can take a while, as you keep adding hot water as it drains, the hotter the better - it usually will work given enough time and depending on whether an elephant clogged your toilet :)
air pressure can work but can explode pipes if not careful

When I lived in Northern Ontario (Canada) and we only had a well, we would go down to the river and get a few buckets of water. Just pour the buckets (pretty quickly) straight down the hole of the toilet, one right after the other. This does the same trick as the bottle suggested to you earlier, it displaces the clog by changing the water pressure. It's not as good as a snake, but it is cheaper, and easier to do at 3 am if you get a clog then.
