What does place only betting mean in horse racing?

Place only betting means that there is no show betting in the race.
Just win and place because there are not enough horses in the race to allow for show betting.

This is because the track feels it would lose money if they allowed show betting.

99.9% of all races have win ,place and show betting.

If you bet a horse to win he has to win in order for you to win money.

If you bet a horse to place you will get money if he wins or places(comes in 2nd)

If you bet a horse to show(comes in 3rd) you will get money if he wins,places or shows.

In most cases but not always a horse will pay more to win and less for 2nd and even less for 3rd becuase of the pool money bet in the race.

To put it simply when you bet on a horse he has to finsih as well or better than you bet him for in order for you to cash your ticket.

Depending on the number of horses in the race you will win if your horse is placed in the first 3 - at reduced odds though.................I think!!!

place only means it has to win each-way means it has to finish in the first 3 with reduced odds i use to do an eachway tricast and once the 3 horses i backed finiished 1-2-3 in any order but i wrote the slip out wrong although the bookie knew what i was doing so instead of 25 pounds i got 2.50 pack up on the nags its a mugs game i found out the hard way

Since place betting is defined by winning if the horse you chose finishes either first or second, if there are not enough horses entered in a specific race the "show" bet which allows you to win if your horse comes in first, second, or third will be canceled thus leaving "place betting only".

To place is to come in second in a horse race, so when you are putting down a place only bet you are betting on which horse will finish second.
