Best transportation between Berkeley/Piccadilly (London) and Heathrow airport?

I'm wondering what the best transportation mode? How much does it cost for a family of four (2 kids)? Will it be more cost-effective (or faster) by taxi or other shuttle?

Anything I need to take note of?

yep I agree with above, tube is probably best though, it can take a while (1.30hrs approx) but you can get a travelcard - http://www.tfl.gov.uk/tfl/fares-tickets/2006/one-day/travelcard-day.shtml
By the way you want the Dark Blue Line - The Picidilly Line

you will find a map and journey planner on this website.
make sure your travelcard is for all the zones you are traveling on(is shown on the maps) and it may be worth you getting a 3 day travelcard or oyster card if you are in london for long enough. Travelcards can be used on both the Underground and London red buses.
Happy travels...

There are two very easy ways to get from Heathrow to Central London (or vice versa). The first would be to take a shuttle or taxi which will be the more expensive of the two. I don't know exactly what it would cost, but it would not be very cost effective. Depending on the time of your flight it could take anywhere from 45 minutes to 2 hours (I flew in at 8:00 AM and it took about 90 minutes). The second and much cheaper method would be The Tube. You could take the purple line from Piccadilly to any Heathrow terminal. This would be much much cheaper, and depending on traffic on the roads it could be much faster.

Depends what you mean by best.

For a family of 4 with luggage a taxi would be quickest and most convenient, costing around £40-50. Your hotel might have a cheaper mini-bus service.

You can use the tube - it takes about 45 minutes but you have ticket barriers and stairs to deal with. Also, check your departure terminal because the tube isn't going to Terminal 4 (used mostly by British Airways) until September 2006* and you'll have to use a replacement bus service between Hatton Cross underground station and Terminal 4 until then. Which is added time and aggravation.

There is a fast train service, the Heathrow Express, that departs from Paddington. But youhav ethe hassle of getting to Paddington, and the cost for 4 on the Express will cost £40.40, which plus cost of getting to Paddington is going be similar to getting a taxi.
